Summer Reading Kicks Off on June 6

Summer is the busiest season at River Forest Public Library, and it all kicks off in a big way with the Summer Reading Kickoff Party on June 6, 2:30-4:30 PM. There will be free shaved ice from Kona Ice for card holders who sign up for the summer reading program (while supplies last) and lots of fun entertainment, including a live performance by School of Rock Oak Park, a bubble show, face painting, and a photo booth. The event typically attracts over 500 attendees. This year’s summer reading theme, Color Our World, has also shaped the summer event calendar, which is packed with artistic and color-inspired programming for all ages.

According to the American Library Association, “summer reading programs began in the 1890s as a way to encourage school children, particularly those in urban areas and not needed for farm work, to read during their summer vacation, use the library and develop the habit of reading.” While children are most likely not needed for farm work today, the goals of the library’s summer reading program are essentially the same. The use of prizes and engaging programming are additional ways to get kids, especially reluctant readers, interested in reading and going to the library. Studies show that reading programs prevent summer learning loss and better prepare children for school in the fall. *

Adults are also invited to participate in River Forest Public Library’s summer reading programs. Reading provides many benefits for adults as well, including improved mental health, better sleep, a reduction in cognitive decline, and increased vocabulary. (healthline.com) The National Institute on Aging recommends reading books and magazines as a way of keeping your mind engaged as you grow older. And yes, there are even prizes for adults.

River Forest Public Library librarians work in collaboration with District 90 to get the word out about the reading program. Anne Kowalski, Middle School and Teen Librarian, coordinates many class visits, either at Roosevelt School or by having classes come to the Library, while the Children’s Librarians will visit classes at Willard Elementary School, and welcome students from Lincoln Elementary School to the library. Melaina Maraldi, Children’s Services Manager, also shares a YouTube video with the school librarians, which is shown at school Town Hall Meetings.

The Summer Reading Program at River Forest Public Library runs for 8 weeks, June 6-August 1. Get more details here: (riverforestlibrary.org/summer-reading).
