September Early Literacy Tip

Take Your Child to the Grocery Store

As school starts for the new year, take your child with you to the grocery store. Including your child in food selection can become a fun way to point out different letters and words to a beginning reader. Talking with your child and sounding out the letters on grocery store signs is a great way to start letter recognition in small children, especially when paired with common food items that your child easily recognizes, such as apples, bananas, and carrots. Repeatedly seeing these visual cues paired with their titles is a great way for kids to start recognizing letter arrangements. Learning while being an active part of back-to-school preparation is a win-win for everyone, especially your child!
