December Family Literacy Tip

Is your reader struggling with print books? Try an alternative format! The River Forest Public Library offers a variety of other ways to interact with stories.

It’s important to remember that everyone takes in stories and learns differently so sometimes exploring an alternate format may be just the trick to help your family access a story.

What do we mean by alternate format? Books that aren’t a standard print book like you’re probably imagining. Different formats include audiobooks, eBooks, and even graphic novels! See below some of our favorite alternate formats and how you can borrow them from our library.

Wonderbook – a Wonderbook is exactly that – wonderful! These picture books come with the audio device permanently attached to the book so you can have the story read to you over and over again. They’re simple enough that even your youngest readers can follow along with relative independence and enjoy stories without needing a grownup with them. Want to browse our Wonderbooks? Click this link: Wonderbooks

Audiobooks on CD – If you have access to a CD player, audiobooks on CD are a great way to enjoy stories. Pop in a CD and enjoy a drive or some chores while you listen to a story some to life before your very ears. To browse our Audiobooks on CD, click this link: Audiobooks on CD

Hoopla Digital – Hoopla is a service to access audiobooks, eBooks, comics, movies, and more! All you need is your library card and an email address to create an account then you have access to up to 12 borrows per month per account from their extensive collection. To access Hoopla, download the app or click here: Hoopla Digital.

Libby – Access our collection of eBooks and eAudiobooks right from your smart device or computer. This app, powered by Overdrive, allows you to borrow up to 20 titles and place up to 20 titles on hold at once! Read eBooks on your device or pop in headphones and give your favorite new titles a listen. To access Libby, download the app or click here: Libby

There are so many great ways to access stories and materials at the River Forest Public Library. Why limit yourself to just print books? Help your readers fall in love with stories and even listen to one as a family this holiday season!
