Early Literacy Tip—January 2019

Choose a Variety of Book Formats

Reading and sharing books is the number one way to promote early literacy.  Babies and young children will naturally want to mouth, chew, and manipulate books.  While the typical paper pages of books require some gentleness, other kinds of books are perfect for offering to babies and toddlers. Try stiff chunky books with fold out pages that can be propped up for tummy time, board books that feature textures and touchable elements, vinyl books that can go into the bath, and cloth books that can be cuddled.  All these formats engage a child’s curiosity and desire for sensory input.  As you read, allow your child to help turn the pages and handle the book.
