Early Literacy Tip—September 2016

Create a Literacy Rich Environment at Home
Exposure to books and other printed material is the foundation of all early literacy efforts. Here are a few easy ways to increase the amount of print and text your children see in your own home:
*Set up a chalkboard or whiteboard where you include notes, lists, and a word of the day
*Recycle old book pages or magazines into children’s placements, by using clear contact paper
*Label key items with a simple picture and the word so your child can help you put things in their proper place while learning to associate the printed word with the item
*Place children’s books in every room in your house using baskets, boxes, or bags as needed so that a book is always within reach
