May Children’s Programs
Saturday, 5/12, 11:30 AM,
and Wednesday, 5/16, 11:30 AM, Butterfly Story Time
(Weather permitting–check final dates the day of the program)
Bring your lunch and enjoy a picnic on the front lawn, followed by a story time and the release of the library butterflies. Have fun with library friends and butterflies!
Sunday, 5/20, 2 PM, 4th and 5th Grade Book Club
Students in grades 4 and 5 are invited to join us for a book discussion. In May we’ll read Heart of a Samurai by Margi Preus. Pick up your copy at the Circulation Desk in advance.
June Children’s Programs
Summer Reading Kicks off June 1st with a fun lawn party from 1-4 PM. Join us in the park and sign up for Summer Reading! This year’s theme is “Reading is Delicious”. The program will run through July 27th.
Friday, 6/1, 1-4 PM, Summer Reading Kickoff Party
Start your summer off right! Residents of all ages are invited to sign up for summer reading and then join us in the park for a kickoff party. We will have a moon walk, an inflatable obstacle course, popcorn and lawn games for all summer reading participants.
Monday, 6/11, 1:30 PM, Open Art Drop-in
Drop in to the children’s room for some open ended art activities. All materials will be provided.
Tuesday, 6/12, 2-3 PM, Manners Do Matter: an Etiquette Workshop
Miss Leontina Richardson of Stepping Into Etiquette will present a one-hour basic manners and dining etiquette workshop for kids entering 2nd-4th grades. Space is limited, so registration is required. Call the Children’s Room at 708-366-5205 x 312 or stop by the library to sign up.
Wednesday, 6/13, 1:30-3:30 PM, Open Gaming
All ages are invited to drop in and play Wii Games and board games.
Thursday, 6/14, 3-4:30 PM, Tweens Decorate Flip-Flops!
Kids and teens entering grades 5-8 are invited to the library to make their own customized fabulous flip-flops! You’ll want to wear these sandals all summer long. All materials will be provided. Space is limited so sign-up is encouraged.
Monday, 6/18, 1:30 PM, Open Art Drop-in
Drop in to the children’s room for some open ended art activities. All materials will be provided.
Tuesday, 6/19, 3-4 PM, Kids Fear Factor Food Tasting
Join library staff at Whole Foods for a program featuring odd food stories and a chance to taste some unexpected (yet delicious) foods. For River Forest resident children entering grades 1-5; space is limited so sign up is required. This program will be held in the café at Whole Foods Market-River Forest, located at 7245 Lake Street. Please call the Children’s Desk at 708-366-5205 x312 to reserve a spot.
Wednesday, 6/20 1:30-3:30 PM, Kids Movie
Kids ages 5+ and caregivers/family members, come enjoy a movie with popcorn! Films shown this summer will be food-themed to connect to our Summer Reading program, “Reading is Delicious.”

Kids and Teens, celebrate our Summer Reading theme: “Reading is Delicious” by designing your own apron. You can make an apron for yourself or make one to give as a gift. All materials will be provided. Space is limited so sign-up is encouraged. Kids entering grades 4-6 will make aprons from 3-4:30 PM & teens entering grades 7+ will make aprons from7-8:30 PM.

Teens entering grades 6+, don’t miss the middle school summer book discussion. Books will be available for pick-up at the circulation desk. The first 5 resident participants to register will get a free copy of the book to keep! Snacks will be provided.

Kids and teens entering grades 5 and up- are you looking to get some new books? Want to recycle some old books you’ve already read? Head to the RFPL Bookswap! Donate your old books to the swap in advance from June25th-July 11th to get coupons towards new books at the Bookswap.

Kids ages 4 and up with parents/caregivers- come to the library to play everyone’s favorite board game—Candy Land. Teen Library Council members will be dressed as Candy Land characters and will make the game come alive!

Everyone is invited to the library to celebrate the end of Summer Reading. The energetic
Dave Rudolf will have the whole family moving and grooving during his participatory musical concert.

Wednesday, 8/8, 1:00-2:30 (Grades 2-5), and 3-4:30 (Grades 6-8), Mario Kart Tournament
Kids and teens in grades 2-8 are invited to prove their racing skills by participating in a Mario Kart tournament. Children entering grades 2-5, register at the children’s desk and join the tournament at 1 PM. Teens in grades 6-8, register at the 2nd floor reference desk and join the tournament at 3 PM.
Thursday, 8/23, Family Lawn Games! 3:30-5:30 for Teens, 5:30-7:30 PM for Families
Have fun on the RFPL lawn with Bocce, Croquet and other fun, outdoor
games!
Tuesday, 8/28, 2:00-3:30, Sharpie Tie-Dye
All ages are invited to drop by the Library Lawn for some creative fun! Bring 1 or 2 cotton items (such as a t-shirt, pillowcase or socks) to tie-dye with sharpies.
